About Winston-Salem

Convenient access, enchanting neighborhoods, a competitive tax rate, and enviable weather combine to make Winston-Salem an attractive home for companies and their employees.

There are so many reasons we’ve chosen to live and work in Winston-Salem. Here are just a few…

Convenient locale
Winston-Salem lies in the heart of the South Atlantic region. The triad is a three-city area comprised of Winston-Salem,Greensboro and High Point located at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Halfway between Atlanta, Georgia, and Washington, D.C., this bustling metropolitan area is just a two-hour drive to the mountains and a four-hour trip to the ocean.

Our schools
North Carolina offers a stellar public school system. Newsweek recently featured an article highlighting the state’s success in overhauling its education system through better teacher training, higher standards, and a more rigorous curriculum. The state’s most radical change involved transforming high schools from an industrial-age model to one that exposes students to a wide range of promising careers.

The state offers some of the nation’s top universities and business schools, including Duke University (ranked #4 for full-time students by Business Week), the University of North Carolina (Ranked in the top 5 by EMBA for working executives, #8 by Wall Street Journal based on feedback from corporate recruiters, #14 by Forbes for return on investment, and top 20 for full-time students by Business Week), and Wake Forest University (ranked #37 for full-time students by Business Week), plus 8 of the nation’s top master’s programs, and 12 of the south’s top 100 Bachelor’s programs, including High Point University (#12) and Winston-Salem State University (#35).

Area amenities
The region is home to two internationally renowned medical centers, one of the country’s leading universities, and a burgeoning technical research park. The downtown area is bustling with restaurants and music venues, trendy boutiques, and a gallery district.

The arts
Winston-Salem has long been known as North Carolina's “city of the arts.” In fact, this metropolitan area of 230,000+ residents ranks first nationally in per capita contributions to the arts. Home to the nation's first Arts Council, the world-renowned North Carolina School of the Arts, The River Run Film Festival, and the National Black Theatre Festival, Winston-Salem boasts a wealth of cultural offerings. Local galleries and museums offer the region's most impressive exhibits and stimulating programming. Visitors can experience the best in contemporary, historical, African-American, and scientific exhibitions. Historic Old Salem preserves the past in a “living” museum, while SciWorks thrills children of all ages with interactive exhibits, a planetarium, and a 15-acre environmental park.

Recreational opportunities
Winston-Salem has strategically configured a series of sports venues in one convenient location. Baseball, football, basketball, hockey, and soccer facilities are all clustered around the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum and the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds. And in 2009, a new minor league ball bark will open downtown to house the Winston-Salem Warthogs .

The Triad was recognized as the best big city for golf in America by Golf Digest. With 262 playable days for golf a year, low average greens fees, and courses designed by well-known designers like Robert Trent Jones, Donald Ross, Hale Irwin, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer, is a golfer’s dream come true.

Cost of living
“If you're making a move domestically, and you're interested in finding the place where your dollar will go the farthest, try Winston Salem, N.C., which is the least expensive U.S. city surveyed and ranks No. 119 on a worldwide basis.” CNNMoney.com.
